Preliminary installation instructions for the LBA Professional:
You will need to make a few adjustments in your BIOS setup prior to installing your
LBA Pro and hard drive(s).
You should do a Print Screen of each of the BIOS screens so that you will have a record of the original settings.
If you don’t have printing capabilities then you should write down the settings.
Once you have a record of the BIOS settings you can start to make adjustments.
User Define your hard drives as 1024 cylinders, 16 heads and 63 sectors. If there is a setting for LBA mode, Large Disk Access, CHS Mode, or Large Mode you will need to set this to normal, standard, disabled or off. This will prevent the BIOS from attempting to provide LBA and will allow the LBA Pro to do its job.
Users with an IBM bios will not need to do this. You can now install the LBA Pro and any hard drive(s). Some drive combinations yield less compatibility.
If you are having problems with your Master/Slave configuration try switching the drives.
A single drive on the data cable must be jumpered as a single drive (Western Digital drives should have no jumpers.) If there are two drives on a data cable then you must use the appropriate master and slave settings. The drive closest to the motherboard or controller card is the slave.
The drive furthest from the motherboard or controller card is the master. Consult your Hard Drive documentation for correct jumper settings and positioning.
Always make sure the data cables are correctly plugged in. You may need to check your documentation for the location of pin 1 on the hard drive. The red shaded edge of the data cable indicates where to line up to pin 1. The motherboard also has a pin 1 which must line up correctly with the data cable. You may need to check your documentation to determine which pin is pin 1
IRQ 15 is reserved for the secondary IDE port in your computer. No other add-on cards can use this IRQ. If a problem occurs you will have to change the add-on card to a different IRQ.
You must have a bootable DOS 5.0 or above [WIN 95 startup disk is OK] floppy disk containing the following DOS files: FDISK.EXE, FORMAT.COM, DEBUG.EXE and SYS.COM.
You must backup the hard drive If you have any type of disk manager software (EZ Drive, Ontrack, Max Blast, Drive Rocket, etc.) installed. You must uninstall the programs if possible before installing the LBA Pro. Following the uninstallation you will need to repartition and reformat the drive.
Getting rid of that unwanted Disk Manager software can sometimes be a problem. Here are some sure fire ways to delete the Disk Manager.
To Debug the drive:
1a. Boot the system from a DOS floppy disk (You must have a bootable DOS 5.0 or above [WIN 95 startup disk is OK] floppy disk containing the following DOS files: FDISK.EXE, FORMAT.COM, DEBUG.EXE and SYS.COM.)
1b. Type "fdisk."
1c. Delete all partitions on the drive.
1d. Reboot and check to be sure that all the partitions on the drive have been removed. If not, proceed to method #2.
2. This procedure will eliminate all data on the master boot record of the drive. Be certain that this is what needs to be done. Boot from a DOS floppy disk (You must have a bootable DOS 5.0 or above [WIN 95 startup disk is OK] floppy disk containing the following DOS files: FDISK.EXE, FORMAT.COM, DEBUG.EXE and SYS.COM) type "debug" and enter the following lines followed by the
"ENTER" key:
F 200 L200 0
a 100
mov ax,301
mov bx,200
mov cx,1
mov dx,0080 (Note: use 0081 for second fixed disk)
int 13
int 3
(enter a blank line here)
G=100
q
The drive should now have no partitions on it. Use Fdisk to set up the drive and then format it.
To partition the drive:
1) Boot from a DOS floppy disk (You must have a bootable DOS 5.0 or above [WIN 95 startup disk is OK] floppy disk containing the following DOS files: FDISK.EXE, FORMAT.COM, DEBUG.EXE and SYS.COM.)
2) At the prompt type "fdisk"
3) Use option "5" to select the drive in a two or more drive system. Warning: FDISK will automatically partition the first physical drive unless otherwise specified from within menu choice "5". If you have a working first drive then you will not want to re-partition it.
4) Choose option "1" to create a Primary DOS Partition.
5) For 2.0G or larger drives you will need to create an "extended partition." Follow the FDISK instructions.
6) On the "extended partition" you will need to create "logical drives" which will appear to the operating system as the "D", "E", "F" etc. drives. The number of drives to define is up to the user and depends on the size of the whole hard drive. Follow the Fdisk instructions.
7) Reboot when instructed.
To format the drive:
1) At the prompt type FORMAT c: /u /s
2) If you created an "extended partition" with "logical drives" format them using FORMAT x: /u where "x" is the drive letter.
Further instructions for repartitioning and reformatting can be found in your computer’s DOS manual or from the Hard Drive/Computer manufacturer(s).
